According to an article in The Campbell River Star, NHL stars, Rod Brind’Amour and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers traded their hockey sticks for golf clubs (sort of)—all to benefit Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
The organization raised a whopping $120,000 this summer as a result of the 22nd annual Brind’Amour/Nugent-Hopkins Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic dinner and auction.
The duo rendered sentimental speeches at the annual event, but some argue that the stars were outshined. Founder Kim Wood, who started the organization more than 2 decades ago, addressed the crowd by video. Wood herself has cystic fibrosis (CF).
After the video, she also announced the birth of her son, Charlie. Charlie was born through surrogacy and is a “dream come true” for his mother. Although she says that CF has kept her from doing a number of things, she says she wasn’t going to let it keep her from being a mom. Brind’Amour calls Wood’s journey “an inspiration.”
Brind’Amour and Nugent-Hopkins even jumped in on the signature 17th hole. The winners were Doug Forbes King, Jason Andrew, Dave Wackowich, Liz Stirret and Rick Waldhaus. Their score was 16 under par. But with the thousands of dollars raised for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, it seems like everyone went home a winner.
