Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome Needs Your Attention!

As summer approaches, let’s not take our eye off the ball on awareness efforts!
June is Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome Awareness Month!
Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the immune system attacking some of the normal proteins in the blood. This can cause blood clots in the arteries or veins.
In layman’s terms, blood basically clots when it shouldn’t, creating the potential for serious side effects such as DVT, PE, heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, etc. Women with the disease may have difficulties with pregnancy.
While on the topic, women are more likely than men to be affected by antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. Reportedly 75% to 90% of those affected are women.
Still, just about 1% of the U.S. population is believed to have antiphospholipid antibody syndrome.
