Knowing the Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer May Save Your Life

Ovarian cancer is the most deadly form of reproductive organ cancers. Why? Because it’s usually not diagnosed until it has reached the late stages because the symptoms are often overlooked, or worse, ignored.

In an effort to change this, I want you to know what those symptoms are. According to the Centers for Disease Control, ovarian cancer may cause the following signs and/or symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding (particularly past menopause)
  • Pain or pressure in the pelvic area
  • Abdominal or back pain
  • Bloating
  • Feeling full too quickly, or difficulty eating
  • A change in bathroom habits, such as more frequent or urgent need to urinate and/or constipation

Don’t panic if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, but don’t ignore them. See your doctor as soon as possible and ASK TO BE TESTED FOR OVARIAN CANCER. (Sorry for shouting, but some of us are too afraid to speak up, and very often doctors are quick to dismiss women when they complain about something.)

One comedian, Jen Coken, lost her mother to ovarian cancer because her diagnosis was too late, and treatment was ineffective. She makes it a habit to delve into the darker corners of humor to raise awareness about getting screened. She believes if her mom had been diagnosed sooner, she may still be alive, today.

Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment, and the survival rate is remarkably higher among that patient population. So, don’t put it off. Read the symptoms listed above and take action if necessary.
