A Cancer Patient’s Inspiring Decision to Join Nursing

Ashley Moore survived cancer. For many people, that’s enough. Moore, however, chose to give back in a surprisingly direct and immediate way. She decided to become a nurse. Keep reading to learn more about her story, or follow it at the original source here.

Previously, Moore worked as a teacher in Texas. She quit teaching, however, during her treatment for cancer. Doctors diagnosed Moore with Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Moore received treatment at Medical City Plano in Texas. After her diagnosis she quit teaching. After her treatment helped her quit cancer she knew her next step.

After two weeks away from the medical center, Ashley Moore enrolled at Collin College in McKinney. She decided to take classes and become a nurse.

The nurses at Medical City Plano made an impact on her beyond treatment. Her experiences with them convinced her to change the plan of her life. “I had contact with these nurses for a reason and I just had to follow that,” Moore said.

In January of 2018, Moore returned to Medical City Plano. She entered the building this time, however, as an employee instead of a patient. She started her first shift as a unit clerk.

Amanda Lewis, a registered nurse working at Medical City Plano says she hopes to make a diference in peoples’ lives. She describes Moore and her decision to pursue nursing as awe inspiring. She says that knowing she inspired someone else – in such a way that they would change career plans, begin nursing, and specifically desire to come work with the team at Medical City Plano – as “just awesome.”

Moore is similarly passionate about her new work. She describes her excitement in being able to connect with and help people who are going through what she experienced. She wants to let them know that she’s been there, on the other side of it.

“I’ve been in this room, and I felt a lot of love in this room,” Moore says, speaking of her experiences and what she imagines telling patients.

“I hope you do, too,” she finishes.
