CDC Apologizes for “Ticking People Off” With Their Creative Tick Prevention Tweet

Here’s something on the lighter side of disease prevention efforts!

Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tweeted a photo of a poppy seed muffin which was meant to raise awareness on tick prevention.

The tweet read the following:

“Ticks can be the size of a poppy seed. Can you spot all 5 ticks in this photo? Learn how to prevent tick bites. http://bit.ly/2rjox6U”

And yup, they included a picture of a poppy seed muffin zoomed in to reveal real-live TICKS ON THE MUFFIN!

Needless to say, Twitter responses were loud.
“Thank you for ruining muffins for me you monsters”
“Ugh I will never be able to eat poppy seed again”
“WHAT DOES EATING TICKS HAVE TO DO WITH TICK BITES CDC I’M BEFUDDLED”

This one was my favorite:

“Wow, the CDC’s muffin-prevention movement is effective”

But other Twitter users didn’t mind the colorful way to raise awareness.

“[this was meant] to get your attention… Seems like it worked!”
“Excellent visual. Important info. Tick-borne diseases can be devastating, life-altering”

And to its credit, the CDC acknowledged the mini firestorm, and even got in a good pun:

“Sorry we ticked some of you off! Don’t let a tick bite ruin your summer. Protect yourself.”
And on that point, we can all agree!
The number of illnesses caused by infected mosquitoes, ticks, or fleas tripled from 2004 through 2016, according to the CDC. On average, 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported each year – and remember, May is Lyme disease awareness month.
So whether you enjoy a good twisted joke or were genuinely put off by the photo, we hope the point was made clear – protect yourself from bug bites as we head into summer!
