Emory University and JScreen Offer Non-Profit Genetic Testing Services

JScreen is a non-profit organization headquartered at the department of Human Genetics at Emory University in Atlanta. JScreen offers genetic testing and educational services, such as genetic counseling. JScreen’s mission is to make genetic testing more accessible and affordable. It strives for this goal through a system of at-home testing.

Genetic samples are collected from saliva and there are two testing options available from JScreen:

  • ReproGEN, which determines the risk of having a child with a rare genetic disorder. This test is offered to people between age 18-45 and screens for over 200 genetic diseases. You can see the full list of conditions screened for in this test here.
  • CancerGEN, which tests for genetic changes/variants that could increase the risk of developing different types of cancer. This test is available for people 21 years and older and screens for variants of over 60 different genes. You can see the full list of genes screened for in this test here.

If the results of a test show high risk, genetic counselor services are available to interpret the results and discuss resources and options in order to plan for a healthy future.

The testing process is as simple as requesting a kit, receiving it, sending the saliva samples to the testing lab, and going over the results with a genetic counselor through a telehealth appointment. A copy of the results will be available for you and your doctor. Results are typically available within three weeks of the sample’s arrival at the lab.

While these tests are not free, JScreen may be able to need-based financial assistance to those that qualify.
