Strength Beyond Measure: NFL Hopefuls Bench Press for Rare Disease Awareness

In the world of sports, the spotlight often shines on athletic prowess and competitive spirit. Yet Uplifting Athletes—a Patient Worthy partner—has transformed the narrative on the power of sport for the greater good.

With over 10,000 known rare diseases affecting over 30 million people in the United States alone, and millions more worldwide, the need for awareness, support, and research is more urgent than ever. Uplifting Athletes recognized this pressing need and merged it with athletic ambition.

Enter Reps for Rare Diseases. This flagship initiative, first implemented in 2015, sees NFL hopefuls turn their bench presses into powerful statements of solidarity for the rare disease community. Their commitment symbolizes a collective effort to uplift those whose voices often go unheard and to contribute to tangible impact.

Reps for Rare Diseases: Harnessing the Power of Sport

Each year, promising former college football players leverage their Pro Day or Combine experiences to champion a cause close to their hearts. These players set a goal for bench press reps to perform. Supporters can pledge for each rep. You can join in today by pledging support for any of the participating athletes this year.

This year,  the participants include JD Bertrand (Linebacker, Notre Dame); Mikhari Sibblis (Defensive Linebacker, Ball State); Camron Johnson (Linebacker and Defensive End, Northwestern); Bryce Gallagher (Linebacker, Northwestern); Solo Turner (Defensive Back, Illinois); Andrew VanBuren (Running Back, Portland State); Jake Heimlicher (Defensive End, UCLA); Alex Felkins (Place Kicker, Penn State); Bryce Sheppert (Safety, Kent State); DJ Miller (Cornerback, Kent State); Quinn Sweeney (Defensive End, Springfield College); Leroy Thomas II (Offensive Lineman, ODU); Porter Wilson (Punter, Duke); and Mitch Davidson (Quarterback, Youngstown State).

Participating in Reps for Rare Diseases is a rewarding experience and one with immense importance. These athletes, in pursuing their dreams, are also giving light to the struggles and needs of the rare community. Says Andrew Van Buren:

“I think it’s important for athletes to use their platform to support causes they care about. We have such a unique opportunity to give back and make a difference in this world. When you are blessed enough to be given a platform, you are also given the ability to impact lives and make the most of your career.”

Bryce Gallagher also expresses his enthusiasm for contribution to Reps for Rare Diseases, stating:

“I’m thrilled to use my Pro Day to support Uplifting Athletes and the entire rare disease community. Being able to help such a great cause and such amazing people is something that is really special to me.”

Since its inception, over 260 players have participated, raising more than $350,000 to support Uplifting Athletes and its charitable programs. Funds raised during Reps for Rare Diseases assist in running valuable initiatives like Uplifting Experiences.

The significance of raising rare disease awareness cannot be overstated. Beyond the statistics, countless individuals and families find themselves grappling with a healthcare system that is often poorly equipped to address their needs. As long as this happens, the need for advocacy and support remains constant. That’s why Reps for Rare Disease is so invaluable: it reminds us of the potential we can achieve through every act of compassion and unity.
