Scientists Find Poly-coated Nanoparticles Plus Therapeutic Drugs Have a Potential as Cancer Treatment

As reported on Science Daily, scientists have combined polymer-coated nanoparticles with therapeutic drugs for cancer treatment, including treatment for ovarian cancer. The nanoparticles target tumors and subsequently release their payloads, a strategy that almost eliminates the side effects of chemotherapy.

Human Use

When preparing for human use, a manufacturing technique is used that develops more particles in less time. Professor Hammond is especially pleased with their recent success working with animal models. The Professor also emphasized their progress in ovarian cancer treatment.

The New Study

Professor Hammond together with Darrell Irvine, a professor of microbiology at Scripps Institute are senior authors of the new study which appears in Advanced Functional Materials.

The FDA’s requirements ensure that the products are aligned with safety standards. The microfluidic device is also used for other types of nanoparticles, including mRNA vaccines.

Scaled-Up Production

Using this approach, the researchers can generate 15 milligrams of nanoparticles in just a few minutes, while the original technique would take close to an hour to create the same amount.

This would enable the production of more than enough particles for clinical trials and patient use according to the researchers.
