Fighting Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis One Boot-Kickin’ Recipe at a Time

You will not often find me in the kitchen–a place that often plays a center role in the lives of families with cystic fibrosis. I have nothing against cooking—other than the fact that I’m consistently awful at it. The one time I tried to make biscuits, they came out of the oven rock solid. And there was that other time I screwed up the simple act of frying an egg—apparently nonstick pans aren’t actually nonstick (still bitter about that). You might be thinking one of two things: “This person is an idiot,” or “Cooking is a learnable skill.” Both thoughts are absolutely correct. I keep telling myself to just try cooking more. Start simple, invest in a cookbook, and go from there.

That’s why I was intrigued to discover “As The Spur Stirs,” a cookbook that benefits cancer and cystic fibrosis research. Because, although cooking is not exactly close to my heart, finding a cure for pain-causing, fear-inducing diseases is.

A video about the cookbook on EastTexasMatters.com led me to the book’s website. There, I learned that Jacqueline Cavender compiled the 450 recipes in the cookbook, a combination of recipes from her mom, other family members, friends and even some celebrities.

The website for “As The Spur Stirs” states 100 percent of net proceeds from book sales benefit the American Cancer Society and cystic fibrosis research.

At this point, I’m not sure how much the cookbook has been able to raise for its cause, but considering the book has been out for some time now, I’m sure it has been able to raise something. Amount aside, any funds raised are so critical.

I’d encourage you to check out the cookbook and the story behind it here. It’s cool enough to inspire even this incompetent chef to give cooking another shot.
