Mom and Daughter Take Ovarian Cancer Fight Online

When I was 16 years old, I was uber-concerned about boys, prom, my pin-straight hair, boys, and how much gas I had in my car. But for 16-year-old Alexis Mae Wither, she had other concerns—and it’s a good thing, according to an article in the daily advertiser. At 16, she found she had ovarian cancer.

Most recently, ovarian cancer has held a prominent place in the headlines, with settlements linked to the long-time use of talcum powder. Although opinions fall evenly on both sides of the argument as to whether the powder is at fault, it’s certainly worth paying attention to the ongoing developments.

For Alexis, something just didn’t feel right. She talks about being “in touch with her body,” and knowing something was off. And she was right. When Alexis was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and facing surgery, Mom, Christina Dunaway, was thankful for the open-line of communication she had with her daughter.

The pair took to social media to share with friends and family about what Alexis was facing and asked for prayer and support. What they received back was more than they ever expected. Thousands of messages of support poured in, encouraging Alexis, lifting up her doctors, and praying for their family. They became an inspiration to many who were struggling.

Before, during, and after surgery to remove her right fallopian tube, right ovary, and a 7.5-pound tumor that had attached itself to both, the support was exactly what Alexis needed. With the surgery behind her and her life stretched out in front of her, Alexis and her mom continue to use social media to encourage young girls to keep the lines of communication open and never ignore the signals your body may be sending you.
