This KC Family is Fighting to Cure SLC6A1

Charlie Fry is a three-year-old from Kansas City living with SLC6A1. His family is very active in the SLC6A1 community, even starting a nonprofit titled “A Cure for Charlie.” They raise money for research on a cure for the rare condition, which currently lacks any treatment.

A Cure for Charlie

The nonprofit’s latest fundraising effort is receiving some help from the Kansas City Chiefs, specifically Tyrann Mathieu, also known as “The Landlord.” He has signed a helmet, which will be auctioned off. Kim Fry, Charlie’s mother, has commended Mathieu for his work, saying that he’s “everything you want your kids to look up to.”

This Sunday, Charlie and his family will be cheering Mathieu on. They’ll also be cheering on their own ‘team,’ Charlie and other children impacted by SLC6A1.

You can find the helmet here, and the auction will continue until February 9.

About SLC6A1

SLC6A1 is a rare, neurological condition that impacts children. It is characterized by seizures, intellectual disability, and severe movement and speech disorders. There is little known about this disorder, but medical professionals have found that mutations on the SLC6A1 result in an inadequate production of energy for the brain. Essentially there is not enough energy for the brain to perform all of the normal functions that it should.

There is research being done on this condition, but there are many aspects that medical professionals do not understand. There are no treatments or cures. Learn more about this condition here.
