Alexander Davis is from Tipton, Indiana. He has been living with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
SMA prevents him from moving much and he is unable to walk. Therefore, he needs extra assistance at times. Recently, Alexander’s parents have been having a difficult time with helping him get in the house with the wheelchair ramp.
The ramp Alexander uses to go in and out the house is falling apart. With SMA, the family has many needs, but the ramp is one that needs to be addressed.
Enter Dawn Dunn. She is a family friend and asked if there is anything she could do to help the family. That’s when they told her about the ramp. Dawn made it her mission to involve the community.
She called a local firefighter and asked if they could build or fix the ramp for Alexander if she raised the funds for the supplies. Even better? They agreed! Next, she asked her friend Amanda Blair if she could help her with a Zumba fundraiser and she agreed.
Within just 20 minutes of the family saying the needed a new ramp everything was set. Anytime Fitness in Tipton allowed the Zumba Locas of Tipton to use their space free for the event.
The Zumba event was successful and the community raised $1,300. It is amazing what can be accomplished when a community comes together. Alexander’s family has stated that they feel the love and support of the community.
