When we think of disabilities, a cane, walker or wheelchair may come to mind. Or perhaps you think of someone who is blind or deaf or has a learning disability. But in fact, three out of four people with disabilities have no outward expression of their physical or mental challenges, according to the Invisible Disabilities Association (IDA). That’s why raising awareness for all those who suffer in silence during Invisible Disabilities Week is so important.
IDA defines invisible disability as “debilitating pain, fatigue, dizziness, cognitive dysfunctions, brain injuries, learning differences and mental health disorders, as well as hearing and vision impairments.”
According to Disabled World, 96% of people with chronic medical conditions live with an illness that is invisible. These include many rare diseases, such as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, Crohn’s disease, tyrosinemia, cystic fibrosis, HAE and many more.
Millions of people live with these conditions and struggle to maintain their quality of life — often without an effective treatment for their disease or disorder. If you or someone you know has an invisibility disability, you can help create awareness in your community during Invisible Disability Week — and beyond.
